Hidden Sounds - London Bridge Station escalator handrail (contact microphone recording)

from Hidden Sounds of Architecture by Simon James

about

A contact microphone recording of an escalator handrail at London Bridge Station. This was an unexpected, tricky recording to make. Attaching contact microphones (which require careful placement and a good solid connection) proved tricky on a moving object. I had to have electricians tape pre-applied to the contact microphones, quickly jump on the escalator, get as good a placement as possible, and hope for the best. Then after an all too short moment of delight as I travelled and listened to the alien friction being picked up, I would prepare for reaching the end where I had to quickly remove the contact microphones before they got swallowed up in the mechanism.

These are some of my favourite contact microphone recordings. I was so surprised by the sounds and the challenge of recording added to the fun. This is a compilation of the best recordings. There is some handling noise on these recordings due to the moving nature of the subject!
