Hidden Sounds - Macallan Monolith (contact microphone recording)

from Hidden Sounds of Architecture by Simon James

/

about

The Macallan site has two huge concrete monoliths that act as vents for the distilling process. As I was wandering around looking for things to record, I saw and heard one of these monoliths let out a belch, a bit like a drunk dragon. I was determined to capture this activity with contact microphones. I rushed to the structure and placed a pair of contact mics on to some metal vents and then placed my headhones over my ears. It was like listening in to the inner workings of a space ship or maybe a living, breathing beast. The industrial drone shifted and changed over time, a bit like an Eliane Radigue piece, and I recorded for close to an hour. It didn't belch again, but I was more than satisfied with what i captured.
